Comcast and Diamond Sports Group Reach New Carriage Agreement

The sports landscape for Comcast customers is about to transform as Diamond Sports Group and Comcast have reached a pivotal new carriage agreement. This significant move ends a prolonged blackout of Bally Sports channels that left countless fans in the dark for months, eagerly awaiting the return of their favorite local teams' broadcasts.

Blackout Resolution

The blackout began in May when Diamond Sports Group, navigating through complex Chapter 11 bankruptcy proceedings over the past 16 months, pulled their channels off the air. The resolution now gives fans the chance to tune back into their preferred local teams, just in time for the start of August. This timing is critical as it aligns perfectly with the peak of the MLB season and the upcoming NBA and NHL seasons.

Streamlining Access for Fans

For Xfinity customers, this means that those subscribing to the "Ultimate TV" package can look forward to live, local MLB, NBA, and NHL games once more. The package, which comes with a free three-month trial period, will cost an additional $20 per month after the trial ends. Fans have up until August 30 to upgrade to this package, ensuring they don’t miss a moment of the action.

Comcast, which boasts a strong presence in major markets like Atlanta, Minnesota, Detroit, Kansas City, Tampa Bay, and Miami, ensures its subscribers a robust offering. Specifically, Bally Sports' streaming app provides an in-market viewing option for fans of the Marlins, Rays, Royals, and Tigers. However, fans rooting for the Braves and Twins will need to rely on the traditional broadcast channels for their local game coverage.

Comments from Leadership

David Preschlack, CEO of Diamond Sports Group, highlighted the significance of the deal, stating, "Entering a new carriage agreement with Comcast, our third largest distributor, is a critical step forward in our restructuring effort, and we are pleased that fans will again be able to access broadcasts of their local teams through Xfinity."

The agreement with Comcast represents more than just access; it stands as a milestone in Diamond Sports Group's ongoing restructuring journey. With the broadcasting arrangement secured, the company can now shift its focus to finalizing agreements with other leagues. “With certainty on our distribution, we are focused on finalizing an agreement with the NHL and resolving our ongoing negotiations with the NBA,” said Preschlack.

Future Strategies

Diamond Sports Group owns 15 regional sports networks under the Bally Sports brand and holds linear rights to 12 Major League Baseball teams. The company's strategic initiatives include completing agreements with teams and league partners to pave the way for a comprehensive reorganization plan. Preschlack emphasized the urgency, stating, "We are mindful that time is of the essence with basketball and hockey seasons fast approaching, and once agreements with our team and league partners are complete, we intend to move expeditiously to present a plan of reorganization to the court."

As the sports world gears up for a bustling second half of the year, the collaboration between Comcast and Diamond Sports Group serves as a reminder of the evolving dynamics in sports broadcasting. Fans can expect a reinvigorated viewing experience, with access to a wider array of local sports content through robust and dependable channels.

This strategic realignment ensures that the intricacies of sports broadcasting keep pace with the fervent demands of the audience, proving once more that the relationship between media providers and sports aficionados is as dynamic and critical as ever.
