Eagles Sign Mekhi Becton Amidst Offensive Line Shifts
The Philadelphia Eagles have bolstered their offensive line by signing Mekhi Becton, a versatile player capable of functioning in multiple roles. Becton's arrival comes at a crucial time as the Eagles navigate through injuries and shifting dynamics within their roster.
Becton’s Initial Role and Unexpected Opportunity
Originally brought on to serve as a swing tackle for starters Jordan Mailata and Lane Johnson, Becton’s position quickly evolved due to unforeseen circumstances. Tyler Steen, who has been a critical part of the offensive line, suffered an ankle injury, leaving a gap at the starting right guard position. Becton, seizing the opportunity, stepped up during his first practice with the first team and made an immediate impact by neutralizing standout Jalen Carter in 11-on-11 drills.
Preparation and Adaptability
Despite missing the initial days of training camp, Becton remained engaged and used his time on the sidelines wisely. "The first few days he wasn't practicing, but he was definitely in my ear the whole time and telling me what I was doing wrong. He's been a great help," said Becton, reflecting his dedication to staying involved and learning from his teammates.
His adaptability has been well noted by his peers. "I think Mekhi is doing great. He's had to bounce around a few positions. We had some guys get banged up. Nothing different than what happens during the season, right?" commented Landon Dickerson, the Eagles' left guard.
Building on a Strong Foundation
Though the exact duration of Steen's absence is still unknown, Becton’s flexibility provides the Eagles with a significant advantage. "We have a guy that can swing at both guard and tackle, can play both guard spots. That's a lot of value in the NFL. He's able to play four out of five positions," added Dickerson, emphasizing the tactical benefits Becton brings to the team.
Eagles coach Nick Sirianni also praised Becton’s performance and potential. "I'm looking forward to that. Mekhi has had a good camp so far and looking forward to getting him some work next to Lane [Johnson] and continuing to work forward with that," Sirianni shared, expressing confidence in Becton's ability to integrate seamlessly into the lineup.
A Prepared Mindset
Becton's mindset and readiness to step in whenever required showcase his professionalism. "I know I'm not, like that wasn't the thing when they signed me here. I don't have to get ready. I just know when my number is called I'm always gonna be ready. If I can start, I'll start. If I don't, I'll be ready," Becton stated, underlining his commitment to the team’s success no matter his role.
For now, Becton remains a valuable component of the Eagles' second-team offensive line, serving as a crucial all-around player who could be called upon at any moment to fill in the gaps. His early signs of promise, coupled with his versatility and readiness, augur well for the Eagles as they aim to build a formidable line capable of protecting their key playmakers.
As the season progresses, all eyes will be on Becton to see how he continues to adapt and grow within the Eagles’ system. His journey exemplifies the essence of being a team player, ready and willing to take on any role for the betterment of the squad.
