Nakobe Dean Shines Amidst Struggles and Determination

Sunday marked a pivotal moment for Philadelphia Eagles linebacker Nakobe Dean. Following a challenging summer plagued by a foot injury, Dean delivered an outstanding performance that didn't go unnoticed. His display this past Sunday was a testament to his hard work and an indication of bigger things to come.

Last season, Dean was thrust into a starting linebacker role, an opportunity that he has had to fight hard to retain this year. Unlike many of his peers, who perhaps have had a smoother progression, Dean's journey has been one of persistence and resilience. He has gradually worked his way into first-team reps, reflecting his determination and tenacity.

Dean teamed up with fellow linebacker Devin White, and under the guidance of defensive coordinator Vic Fangio, has shown significant progress. Fangio has been particularly encouraging, emphasizing physical play as a cornerstone of the Eagles' defensive strategy. This is something that Dean has fully embraced, epitomizing the physical aggressiveness the team has been lacking.

In a standout moment, during the first play of 11-on-11s at Saturday's practice, Dean laid out running back Will Shipley after a pass reception. Moments later, he broke up a pass aimed at receiver DeVonta Smith, further showcasing his versatility and readiness.

Dean attributes part of his successful adaptation to the new linebackers coach, Bobby King. King’s influence has enabled Dean to fully embrace his physical style of play. Dean's dedication to his craft is evident; he endured a grueling offseason regimen, training five days a week until training camp began. "I didn't have a day off, I didn't have an offseason. It was five days a week until training camp started as far as getting that foot right, getting better. It's like I'm not back, I'm better," Dean remarked, highlighting his unwavering commitment.

Dean's goal for this season is clear: he aims to secure the starting linebacker position for the Eagles heading into Week 1. His camp performance so far aligns with his high personal expectations. "I feel like I've had the kind of camp that I'm supposed to have," Dean stated confidently.

Key areas emphasized in training camp include block destruction, blitzing, and tackling. Dean has been particularly responsive to these areas, crediting Fangio’s defensive philosophy for his progress. "He made it a main emphasis of block destruction, of blitzing because Vic's been calling our number, and tackling is a universal thing. We don't want no missed tackles, definitely not at the linebacker position, so it's been kind of universal topic we've been on in camp," explained Dean.

Although tackling in camp has been reduced, Dean makes sure to bring a physical edge to every play. "We don't tackle as much in camp, so you try to thud as much as you can. In past years, I feel like I two-handed touch always. I want to thud," he shared. This commitment to physicality has not gone unnoticed by his offensive counterparts. "Offensive guys have embraced it. They embraced the toughness. They want a feel. The offensive starters, they haven't played in the preseason (games). So the first time they get hit, they don't want it to be Week 1," Dean added.

Dean's versatility as a linebacker is one of his most significant assets. He possesses the ability to cover, fill the A-gap, and blitz the quarterback, which he considers essential traits for any linebacker. "The type of linebacker I am, I feel like you need to be able to do everything. You need to be able to cover, you need to be able to fill that A-gap, you need to be able to blitz the quarterback. And I feel like those are things I do good," Dean said, underlining his diverse skill set.

As Dean continues his third year in the NFL, his resolve to be the first one on the field, despite circumstances beyond his control, is a testament to his work ethic. "I want to play. And I want to be the first one that plays. But I can't control that. The only thing I can control is what I come out here and do every day, work hard and continue to get better."

With performances like these and the backing of his coaches, Nakobe Dean is swiftly emerging as a key player to watch in the upcoming season. His journey, marked by determination and an unyielding drive, reflects the spirit of the Philadelphia Eagles and their renewed defensive vigor.
