Gilmore, who boasts a 13-year NFL career, initially met Gonzalez at the noted Sports Academy. Reflecting on Gonzalez’s demeanor, Gilmore remarked, "It's his demeanor and how he carries himself on the field -- he doesn't say much but he's a team player. One thing I know he can do is really cover man to man and shut guys down. That's one thing I definitely like about him."
Despite his early success, Gonzalez's journey has not been without setbacks. He suffered a torn labrum in Week 4 during a game against the Dallas Cowboys, a particularly poignant injury given his upbringing just outside of Dallas. This incident could certainly test his resilience as the Patriots rely on him as a key defensive asset heading into the season.
Hailing from Texas, Gonzalez's early football path never crossed with Gilmore’s directly until recently. Yet Gilmore, who remains a free agent, has closely followed Gonzalez’s development. "I watched him when he got drafted, I knew the Patriots needed a corner, and I was happy they got him. I texted Mike Pellegrino and said, 'He's going to be good.'" Gilmore shared. The admiration is mutual. Gonzalez stated, "It's real cool to be able to talk to him any time. He's one of the best to ever do it."
Beyond mere mentorship, Gilmore envisions a bright future for Gonzalez, suggesting that his pupil might achieve heights even beyond his own storied career. "I tell him all the time, 'I wish I would have known what I know now in year 5 or 4.' But if I can teach a guy like him, in his second year, the sky is the limit for him," Gilmore added. The veteran cornerback sees sparks of his own ability in Gonzalez. "I see a lot of myself in him. The thing about playing corner is the mind game. If you get the mind right; I think he has all the ability to be whatever he wants to be."
Patriots head coach Jerod Mayo, in his inaugural year of coaching, finds himself in the pivotal role of steering not only the team but also guiding Gonzalez's flourishing career. Mayo is notably the first Patriots head coach to have played professional football for the team. His sentiments echo Gilmore’s regarding Gonzalez’s low-key yet high-performance style. "He's one of those guys who is just going to do his job -- not a rah-rah guy or a big talker," Mayo observed.
Mayo also highlights Gonzalez's physical prowess in practice sessions: "Sometimes I yell at him because I don't think he's trying but at the same time you look at the numbers and he's running 22 miles per hour and it's like, 'Man, this guy is a gazelle.' We'll be leaning on him."
As the preseason looms, with a debut against the Carolina Panthers, the Patriots face a slew of key matchups, notably against the Cincinnati Bengals, Seattle Seahawks, New York Jets, and San Francisco 49ers. Gonzalez is expected to start opposite the seasoned Jonathan Jones, with Marcus Jones likely managing slot duties.
Meanwhile, Gilmore remains off the immediate radar of any team, biding his time and preparing for his next opportunity. "I'm just taking advantage of the time with my family, but staying ready for my opportunity. Being patient and enjoying life right now," he said. In assessing his coaching philosophy, Mayo refutes the simplistic label of "player's coach." "I hate when people say 'player's coach.' I truly believe in being demanding without being demeaning. For me, it's striking the balance to treating these guys as professionals but also holding them accountable to everything they talked about on Day 1 of the spring," he stated.
